Workpackage 3 - Compilation of guidelines for fire safe design

Presentation

Workpackage 3 aims at delivering a compilation of guidelines for fire safe design of road, rail and metro tunnels. It includes :

  • Listing of the relevant guidelines, regulations, standards or current best practices from European countries and other important tunnel countries like e.g. USA and Japan. Relevant documents from European or international organisations are also included (e.g. PIARC and UN/ECE)
  • Definition of the essential parts of these documents, followed by a detailed comparison and discussion in a synthetic form.
  • Redaction of a draft report of the compiled recommendations

The workpackage mainly deals with mitigation measures and includes:

  • Structural safety facilities (emergency exits, rescue teams access, safety niches, etc.)
  • Safety equipment (power supply, ventilation / smoke control, signs, sensors, communication, monitoring, fire suppression, etc.)
  • Reaction and resistance to fire of structures and equipment
